ART

Kevin has placed his focus on creating portraits in pastel and watercolor and is driven by a passion for continuous learning and self-expression. These mediums allow him to capture the nuanced beauty of his subjects, blending subtle hues and textures to convey emotion and depth.

His creative journey is fueled by a desire to push boundaries and explore new techniques, always striving to enhance his skills and discover fresh perspectives. Each portrait is an opportunity to both challenge and celebrate his growth as an artist, reflecting his commitment to evolving through the artistic process.

The Process

Creativity is a process filled with both exhilarating highs and challenging lows, but it is all about exploration. Some days, inspiration flows effortlessly and ideas come to life with ease. Other days the path seems obstructed and finding the spark can feel like an uphill battle. Yet, as Walt Disney wisely said, “Keep moving forward.” This mantra fuels not only Kevin’s artistic process, but he also finds it useful in encouraging him to persevere through the struggles of life and embrace the joyful moments too. Every step, whether smooth or arduous, is a valuable part of the journey, shaping Kevin’s growth and deepening his connection to his craft.

Coraline

Kevin’s daughter, a creative in her own right, wanted this year’s Halloween to be ‘Coraline’ inspired. She created her Wybie costume (pictured above), so Kevin built Other Mother, Other Father, and the Cat as Masks, then ‘fleshed’ them out from there. Kevin’s daughter helped build and decorate the structure that became Other Mother. It turned out to be a really fun Halloween!

Corpse Flower

2024 Was a big year for Kevin’s wife and CSU’s Greenhouse with the blooming of their Corpse Flower. In October Kevin was commissioned to create a Corpse Flower Costume to be used for RAM Talk in downtown Fort Collins and to be used at Future CSU Extension events.

Homecoming Tree

In the fall 2024, Kevin Interned at Wellington Middle High School as part of his Masters of Education requirements and had a great time! He lead a group of Student Council members to build the dance centerpiece, a 12’ tree, with other decorations for their late October Homecoming Dance.

As with many art projects/sculptures, projects tends to look questionable before it gets better. The under-structure may have looked rough, but the structure was important to hold the weight of the balloons used for the canopy - not to mention the need to be stable so as to not topple on students as they danced! A lot of students confessed to Kevin that before the tree was textured with paper and the balloons added, ‘[I] just couldn’t see it.’ That’s ok. I turned out to be a memorable centerpiece garnering lots of compliments!
